2025 NGN Cereal Crop Phenology Results Now Available
We’re pleased to share the 2025 Year 1 results from the NGN Cereal Crop Phenology Investigation, conducted at Frankland River as part of a two‑year (2025–2026) GRDC‑funded project. This work explores how sowing time and phenology influence yield, grain quality and profitability across wheat, barley and oat germplasm in the WA High Rainfall Zone. 🌱 Key Findings from the 2025 Season- Neo CL spring barley was the top performer for yield and profitability across all sowing dates.
- Early April sowing reduced yields for spring wheat and oats due to rapid development and low photothermal quotient (PTQ).
- Winter wheats and barleys showed steadier phenology, especially in early sowings.
- Oats required significantly more management than wheat and barley.
- Grain quality varied with sowing time, with wheat quality declining in late May sowing, while Neo CL barley achieved MALT1 quality at the same sowing time.

Building on the 2025 findings, FAR Australia is now running the same phenology trial in the Esperance Port Zone throughout 2026 and 2027. This will allow us to compare performance across WA’s High Rainfall Zones and provide even stronger region‑specific insights for growers.
